More about Charles Frederick Milton:

- Charlie was born on the 3/9/1921, the youngest of 3 children born to George and Martha Milton of 5 Bellew Street, Earlsfield, which is where he was born. His Father (an engineers’ stores keeper) died suddenly when he was only 7 months old.

- He started school at age 3 so that his Mother could go out to work cleaning to help support the family. He attended Waldren Road infants and junior schools before moving on to the Elliott School, where he stayed until he was 16.

- Whilst his paternal grandparents lived only about a mile away, we do not believe that his Mother had much contact with them, although Charlie was quite close to his Father's brother, his Uncle Fred, who lived around the corner at 39 Huntspill Street.

- As a child he went on holiday to Cornwall with his elder brother, Tom, in his motor bike and side car.

- When he left school Charlie went to work in the packing department of the freight forwarders, Thomas Meadows & Co Ltd, initially based in Milk Street, just off Cheapside in the City of London - he remained with the same company all his working life, eventually managing their Airfreight Depot at Manchester Road, Millwall on the Isle of Dogs.

- WW2 broke out on his 18th birthday - I recall him telling me that on that day he and a friend had gone with a neighbour, by car, to Brighton for the day. He served as an ARP warden until he was called up in 1942. He joined the Royal Navy, serving mainly on the convoy patrol cruiser, HMS Emerald, as an Able Seaman, on which he was a radar operator - his radar training was undertaken at HMS Valkyrie, Douglas, IOM where he met Freda Sherratt, a wren cook in 1944. He enjoyed his time in the RN, luckily was not involved in any action and visited many countries in Africa and Asia.

- Freda and Charlie were married by special license on 13/8/1945 at St Alban the Martyr, Forest Town, which was my Mum's home village - my Mum's brother, Bill, was his best man and her sister, Ida, matron of honour. Unfortunately no photos were taken of the wedding - Charlie wore his naval uniform (with a white ribbon around the collar, instead of the usual navy blue) and Freda war her best clothes.

- The day after the wedding, Charlie and Freda, travelled to London where they were to live - Freda met his Mum for the first time on that day and they all lived together for the next 17 years. Freda had been discharged from the WRNS just before they were married but Charlie had not been - the day after they arrived in London he received a telegram ordering him to join a ship the next day, that would take him to Alexandra, Egypt where he was to join a new ship – upon his arrival he discovered that the telegram had been sent to him by mistake as they should have sent it to a Charles Miller, a stoker – Charlie then had to wait several days before he was able to join another ship to bring him back to England. He was demobbed shortly after that, then returning to his old job at Thomas Meadows.

- 16 months later, Ian Charles was born on 31/12/1946 at St George's Hospital, Tooting - Freda suffered from toxemia during her pregnancy and had to stay in hospital for several weeks before he was born - the weather was particularly bad that Winter.

- Janice Lynne was born 3 years later on 20/7/1950 at the South London Hospital for Women and Children, Clapham Common.

- In the 1950s Charlie and Freda bought the house my Dad was born in for c £200 and converted one of the bedrooms upstairs to a bed sitting room for my Nan.

- Alison Kay (me) was born on 15/2/1961at the South London Hospital for Women and Children, Clapham Common. This was another difficult pregnancy with Freda spending a lot of time resting, in bed.

- 18 months later Freda and Charlie moved from Earlsfield to 178 Warple Road, Staines, Middlesex as Charlie's job moved to Colnbrook (near to Heathrow Airport) - this coincided with Charlie learning to drive (his first 2 cars were Hillman Minx). The move was very emotional for Charlie as he had lived in Bellew Street all his life and was leaving behind his Mum - luckily the new owners accepted my Nan as a sitting tenant.

- Just over 3 years later Charlie’s job moved to Woolwich SE London so they moved again to 47 Maxwell Gardens, Orpington, Kent. During their time in this house, Charlie, Freda and Alison used to visit Freda's sister and brother in law, Ida and Bill, near Mansfield, Notts. They would also spend whit week each year on the Isle of Wight and then August Bank Holiday Week in a different place in England or Wales. Charlie and Freda were both involved with the Parents Association of Alison's Primary School - they were on the Committee for c 6 years, even after Alison had left the school and even then Charlie served at Father Christmas at the School's Bazaar for several years after that.

- In 1971, when Alison was 10, Charlie began to feel a weakness in his left leg and after some tests was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis - sadly, as was quite common in those days, Charlie was not told what was wrong with him until it was too late to travel abroad, which is what he and Freda had planned to do after he retired. He retired from his ill health in 1977.

- In 1981 Charlie, Freda and Alison moved to a bungalow at 40 Hilborough Way, Farnborough Village where they lived until he moved to a nursing home in Catford in 1992 when his condition worsened and Freda was no longer able to look after him.

- He died following a short illness, as a complication of MS, on 21/8/1994. He was cremated at Beckenham Crematorium a few days later.

More about Freda Milton nee Sherratt:

- Freda was born on the 18/1/1920, the youngest of 8 children born to Fred and Ada Sherratt of 15 - 8th Avenue, Forest Town, Mansfield Woodhouse, Nottinghamshire. Her oldest brother and sister were twins, who died in infancy, before she was born.

- Her Father, like all 4 of her brothers, was a coal miner at the local colliery. Her Mother worked as an unqualified midwife/nurse. They lived in a house owned by the mining company. She remembered going to the soup kitchen for food during the General Strike in 1926 - her Father liked a drink and her Mother struggled to make ends meet.

- She attended the local village school, where she stayed until she left at 14. She was quite bright at school, being tutored separately by the head master. She recalled the head master asking her if she wanted to take the 11+ exam - she responded in the negative and nothing more was said. She often wondered what her life would have been like if she had gone to grammar school after all.

- She did not know her grandparents as they had all died before she was born. She used to talk about her Mother's sisters but none of them lived very close to them. However she was very close to her brther, Bill, and her sister, Ida.

- As a child they never went on holiday - they were quite happy going on day trips to seaside towns in Lincolnshire. She attended the local Methodist Chapel, signing the pledge as a youngster, remaining teetotal all her life. As a teenager she had a terrier dog, Bessy.

- When she left school she worked in the local post office and at a hosiery factory in Mansfield.

- WW2 broke out when Freda was 19. Soon after she went to work at a munitions factory in Staffordshire which she hated - the chemicals used ruined her teeth and she suffered from tooth ache for years after that. In 1942 she applied to join the forces and joined the WRNS - she bitterly regretted not doing this sooner as she loved every minute of the experience. She did her basis training at Loch Lomond before joining HMS Valkyrie, Douglas, IOM (a radar training college) where she was a cook. She was popular as she was quite happy to earn extra money by ironing the sailors' uniforms. She met Charlie Milton, a sailor, there in 1944.

- Charlie and Freda were married by special license on 13/8/1945 at St Alban the Martyr, Forest Town, which was Freda’s home village – her brother, Bill, was Charlie’s best man and her sister, Ida, matron of honour. Unfortunately no photos were taken of the wedding - Charlie war his naval uniform (with a white ribbon around the colour, instead of the usual navy blue one) and Freda wore her best clothes.

- The day after the wedding, Charlie and Freda, travelled to London where they were to live - Freda met her Mother in law for the first time on that day and they all lived together for the next 17 years. Freda had been discharged from the WRNS just before they were married but Charlie was still in the RN - he received a telegram the day after they arrived in London with details of his next posting, in Alexandria, only to discover that it was a mistake when he got there! He was demobbed shortly after arriving back. After that he went back to his old job at Thomas Meadows, freight forwarders, based in the City of London.

- Freda found living in London difficult at first as she did not really get on with Charlie’s Mum (they got in each others way) and the house did not have electricity or hot water, which she was used to at home.

- In the 1950s Charlie and Freda bought the house Charlie was born in for c £200 and converted one of the bedrooms upstairs to a bed sitting room for my Nan. Money was tight and they worried that they would not be able to afford the mortgage.

- Alison Kay (me) was born on 15/2/1961 at the South London Hospital for Women and Children, Clapham Common. This was another difficult pregnancy with Freda spending a lot of time resting, in bed.

- 18 months later Freda and Charlie moved from Earlsfield to 178 Warple Road, Staines as Charlie's job moved to Colnbrook (near to Heathrow Airport) – this also coincided with Charlie learning to drive. Freda was very happy about moving, particularly as they left her Mother in law behind.

- Just over 3 years later my Dad's job moved to Woolwich SE London so they moved again to 47 Maxwell Gardens, Orpington, Kent. During this time, Charlie, Freda and Alison used to visit Freda's sister and brother in law, Ida and Bill, near Mansfield, Notts. They would also spend whit week each year on the Isle of Wight and then August Bank Holiday week in a different place in England or Wales. - Freda worked as a school meals supervisor at Alison's primary school for about 15 years which she really enjoyed. Both Charlie and Freda were very much involved in the Parents Association of the same school - they both served on the Committee for c 6 years, even after Alison had left the school. They had a llasa apso dog, Seng, who Freda adored.

- In 1971, when Alison was 10, Charlie began to feel a weakness in his left leg and after some tests was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis - sadly, as was quite common in those days, Charlie was not told what was wrong with him until it was too late to travel abroad, which is what Charlie and Freda had planned to do after he retired. - Charlie died following a short illness, as a complication of MS, on 21/8/1994. Freda died 4 years later on 21/12/1998, whilst Alison was pregnant with her only child, having moved to a Nursing Home after being diagnosed with cancer. They were both cremated at Beckenham Crematorium.
